Story

Head

In the stories about the Watchmaker in Penacony, he always possesses a unique insight that allows him to easily discern business opportunities beneath the dreamy bubbles, and create grandiose enterprises that none have thought of.

The frontier prison earned its freedom amidst the Cancer of All Worlds, and welcomed peace and prosperity under the radiance of The Family. It is said that was when the Watchmaker entered the fray. His eyepiece reflected the essence of this Dreamscape — People spend like wastrels in the Moment of Dusk only to "seek the impossible in dreams." From then on, Penacony's dreams started to contain many incredulous objects: Teapots that can tell jokes, race cars that twirl as they drive, and mansions that switch their location every day... Most of them are utterly useless, however they are being sold at astronomical prices. And those who visit from afar are willing to toss mountains of cash for them.

This is a fantastical Dreamscape, so why not indulge in madness? The words "Exclusive and only in the dream" are enough to redefine the worth of luxuries in the Dreamscape.

The Alfalfa Family and old Dreamchasers from the commercial world often feel regret about this, lamenting that they did not spot these opportunities at earlier times. The Watchmaker simply saw a bit further than them — Just a bit further every time.

Hands

Why the Watchmaker is called "the Watchmaker" is the biggest puzzle in this serialized story.

Some say he was once a craftsman at a clocktower. Some say he was once a merchant who sold timepieces. There are even those who say his head is shaped like a watch face — Just like Clockie, which he created.

As rumors abound, the wristwatches in the dream soared in popularity with the Watchmaker's fame. The Dreamchasers know these watches have nothing to do with the esteemed man, yet still regard the watches as a way to show their respect for him and a symbol of good fortune. Due to the promotion of many commercial activities, the clock symbol became the most ubiquitous thing in Penacony — Clothes, accessories, food... From graffiti in the alleys to the giant timepieces in the hotel lobbies, the influence of this legendary mogul can be seen anywhere.

"Who wouldn't like clocks in Penacony?"

The real Watchmaker seems to have assented to this and never expressed any opinions against that initial wristwatch design, till the clock symbol just became another fact of life in Penacony, till no one ever asked about the origin of the Watchmaker again.

Body

In the various legends in Penacony, the Watchmaker has very diverse identities and appearances.

In these rootless fables, he is sometimes a kind old gentleman, an elegant lady, and even a giant gentleman hundreds of feet tall... however, no matter the version of the story, he is always magnificently dressed.

Legends say that the Watchmaker will share his secret with his dance partner at the Dreamscape where dusk and dawn intertwines. Hearing this, people eagerly join the dance floor and invite every single mysterious guest hidden in the lavishly-dressed crowd — More and more Dreamchasers meet each other in this way and the ball gradually becomes a place to socialize for friendships and love. The expensive tickets are always sold out upon release. Even if the master dressed to the nines from legends never appeared, it did not hinder the passion with which the guests sought an encounter with him.

"Your outfit... could you be the famous Watchmaker?" This question went from what was initially a genuine query to an expression of flattery, finally becoming a code phrase for an invitation to a dance.

The Watchmaker gained a new business of hosting balls, and the Dreamscape had an extra dash of romance and passion added to it.

Feet

The Watchmaker has trodden over every inch of the Dreamscape and also across the annals of Penacony's history. His name has been talked about for centuries in this land of the dreams, and Dreamchasers of today can still hear of his whereabouts.

People start to suspect whether the Watchmaker is one person, a group, or a lie woven by The Family.

Some Dreamchasers swear to unveil the truth about the Watchmaker. They head to various Dreamscapes to seek traces of the mysterious mogul, only to gain nothing but mirages — A mysterious guest at a certain business negotiation, a masterless brand that soared into unexpected success, a huge investment with no traceable source... Every time they try to deduce that the Watchmaker does not exist, they are proving that the Watchmaker is everywhere in the dream.

Books about the Watchmaker fill the bookshelves in the Primal Waking Library. His name forever envelops Penacony.

The more people want to discover the truth, the more they will be blinded by lies... Amidst the thousands of legends and rumors, this superstar of the festivities will only leave his footprints, but never his face.

  1. Will make it a lot easier to reach break effect needs for Raun Mei without using rope slot on break effect, without her lightcone, and without memories of the past.
It’s not that bad, specifically for her at least. She’ll be able to reach her break points while on Meshing Cogs+ Energy Recharge rope much more easily.

  2. I don’t know who this set is for, some would say ruan mei but at best I see it as a starter set for anyone who got ruan mei and still hasn’t built her, because BE isn’t hard to get it is one of the most common things you will roll, I have 170% of it, you need 160 cause the remaining 20 comes from ruan mei’s passive. So messenger I think it’s called the current BiS seems to be the BiS as well until a new speed set comes out that provides allies with even more speed that this already does.
The only issue I have is this is coming after RM released, everyone has built her already.

  3. How does the 4pc work? It says it grants all allies 30% BE after ult is used on allies, implying that the wearer doesn’t get the BE. I don’t know if it’s worded weirdly or something but I don’t understand why it would be important for allies to get BE but the wearer (Ruan Mei) doesn’t

    • – The “uses their Ultimate on an ally” condition means the Ult has to be an ally-targeted ability for it to trigger the effect.
      – “X for all allies increases” means the whole team receives the buff, including the wearer.

Messenger Traversing Hackerspace set already exists as a precedent if you wanted to test it for yourself. Functions the same, just provides different stats.

  4. Ruan Mei ult is a field, it does not target an ally. It’s likely that her ultimate won’t actually work with the 4-pc.

    • Ruan Mei’s ult counts as “targeting” your team just like Bronya’s does. Otherwise many of the support sets would be completely worthless.

What happens when you click on her ultimate? You get into the ally targeting screen and all of your team members are highlighted = targeted. And then once you pop you get the field.

  5. This set seems kind of underwhelming compared to the current support sets like the Hackerspace speed set. Not sure what the other guy is talking about but Break Effect is not the super stat that you’d think it is, even in Ruan Mei teams.

    1) Ruan Mei can easily get 160 (+20 from trace) BE she needs from 4-star cone and her own relics and because it’s a common roll.

    2) She already innately gives her team BE from her kit and it’s been proven that this game rewards you for diversifying buffs (attack/speed/crit/BE etc) instead of going all in on a single stat because of diminishing returns.

    3) How often do you actually get to break a boss bar? I just did MoC 12 and I broke Kafka’s bar twice before she died which I imagine is the average for most – with Ruan Mei’s ult up it would be 3-ish because her ult triggering counts like half a break. Now if this was Break Efficiency it would be S-tier combined with Ruan Mei’s innate Break Efficiency but you’re not getting more broken bars with just Break Effect.

Maybe this set works specifically with e6 Xueyi in mind but that would be luxury for the average player cause at the end of the day she’s still a 4-star.

    • -Luka who one shots with break effect
-Xueyi of course (e6 not even needed)
-And on your point about diversifying buffs: use the set on someone who doesnt give break effect which is like every other Harmony
      – Not everyone, like me, has that 4 star lightcone for Mei and im using meshing cogs

  6. The way they release these a patch later knowing everyone is going to be excited to farm for 1.6 characters only to have their best in slots revealed in the next patch livestream.💀

It’s essentially Messenger but for Break Effect. It will be interesting to know if the bonus applies to her before she casts and therefore the amount she gives to allies in her ult will get the 4pcs bonus and scale with that boost, or if she gets it after it calculates her existing Break Effect scaling when she casts the ult and then has the set buff apply to her and the team after.

It’s very unlikely to apply the 4 set bonus before buffing the party, but that’s something that can only be found in testing down the line. Sometimes weird interactions are implemented, but I won’t be disappointed if they take this into account. It’s already going to be a really good set regardless.

I can’t believe they are just going to say NOTHING about the the best in slot sets for this patch’s banner 5 stars are going to be coming very very soon, tailor made for them in the next update. Ruan Mei is one of those characters that doesn’t care about building crit stats as she isn’t a crit boosting harmony character. She doesn’t mind getting a decent amount of attack so long as she’s hitting the speed threshold on talia, and a couple points above for speed tuning, and gets all of her survivability needs met first and foremost. So thief pieces farmed with her in mind won’t do the job for Xueyi, even if you do have some attack on them. And she’s a harmony so while BE% is her top priority, she could still utilise messenger if you really wanted to so with thief, talia, and messenger as copium/crazy BE rolls meeting her stat goals; and given how we do already have those available it seemed like they’ve already provided everything we needed. We aren’t starved for options for her like we sometimes are.
We finally get characters (Xueyi and Ruan Mei) who would WANT to use thief and talia over other options, so we get that moment of “ohhhh so THAT’S who the set it made for”, after watching them pretty much collect dust all this time as nobody’s favourite. So it feels like we have already been provided their best gear options we just hadn’t met them yet.
Sometimes we don’t have great relics available when they release a character, but it did seem like they had something set aside until it was her time to step onto the scene with her very niche build priorities and that isn’t too harmony focused so it still compliments Xueyi to give her more choices than just the quantum set.

And then they bring out a PERFECT, TAILOR MADE Ruan Mei set we had no reason to anticipate and hold off on farming thief for her.

If you listen closely you can hear the maniacal laughter of Hoyoverse devs all the way in Shanghai…

I was excited when I got a thief piece that rolled into defence %. DEFENCE% OF ALL THINGS. THE SCOURGE OF MY RELIC ROLLS AND MY MODELLING RESIN SUBSTATS. IT WAS FINALLY IN MY FAVOUR. ON THIEF. OVER 20% DEFENCE SUBSTAT WITH SPEED. XUEYI DOESN’T WANT DEFENCE SHE WANTS CRIT. AND SHE WANTS THIEF.

    And Ruan Mei wants watchmaker’s. ; – ;

My disappointment is immeasurable, and my day is ruined. 🙁

I’ll never complain about balancing changes before release as being ‘nerfs’ to something they never intended for us to know about yet. And I’ll never complain about being given sets designed around niche play styles to really make them shine.

But this? It hurts all the more when they give you EXACTLY what you wanted, that you didn’t think they were even going to bother with as there is already a decent option or two out there. But they did it. They really did it. We got what we wanted. But at what cost???? (Time, sanity, resin).

o7 to all those Ruan Mei pieces I’ll use for one patch, only to be upstaged by something far better in the next patch. Oh god I won’t even be able to fully level and build her in time to make use of it either before the relic grind begins again.

The things I do for Break Effect%

      • Not in the slightest. I’ll stick with what I’ve got and get watchmakers one day…
I went through the 5 stages of grief in real time on this post.

Your name resonates with me on a personal level, Concerned Break Effect.

    • Thief is still good, 100% up time without needing to Ult, and you get some energy back if Ruan Mei happen to break enemies. This is only useful when you run DoT or Xueyi/Break effect team

    • I only got one issue dawg, this is not her tailor made piece, her ult is not on an ally, it’s a field that buffs the team, it’s not marked on allies. So at best you are getting the 2pc, but even if say the 4 pc activated it is not doing a lot, not unless you run a BE team. For a normal hypercarry the messenger spd buff is far better. As of now nothing quite beats spd in this game. Even PF wants you to go as many times and as fast as you cant. As for BE is hard to hit, nonsense, it rolls waaay too much on all relics and you really need so little of it. I have no signature LC at S1, its the 4 star one at S3 I have, already 170% BE and my planar doesn’t even have any BE rolled on it, its just from the 5 other pieces.
